Isaac Sidmon Smith papers, 1833-1920.

Manuscript materials contain correspondence, scrapbooks and memorabilia. Included are letter from Benjamin P. Fish, Smith's son-in-law, relating to his experiences in Chicago and St. Louis prior to and during the Civil War, the struggle to keep St. Louis and the State of Missouri in the Union, and the war conditions in the Mississippi River area. Scrapbooks belong to Smith's daughter Julia Smith Fish, containing her correspondence with Joseph Jefferson, newspaper clippings, playbills and other material.

Born in Oranage County, New York on Mar. 1, 2804, Isaac S. Smith was the son of Dr. Elisha and Abigail Smith. He married Hannah A. Fleming on May 3, 1827, and after her death in 1829, he married Julia Anne Clark on December 1, 1830. Smith studied medicine with his father and graduated from the Medical College of the University of the State of New York in 1840, where he later became an instructor.
